COUNTERPOINT – If the agreement is obvious on Mayotte, the Minister of the Interior will have to take into account the demand of the right and the Lepenists for an extension to the whole country.

Can we resolve the problem of a specific territory without reopening a national debate on immigration? This is Gérald Darmanin’s challenge. After the long series of a law whose a third was censored by the Constitutional Councilthe executive no longer wanted to launch other legislative projects on the subject. Even the alterations of the AMEa promise from Élisabeth Borne made to the right confirmed by Gabriel Attal to Olivier Marleix, must be made through regulatory channels.

The situation in Mayotte is specific. The extent of illegal immigration, mainly from the Comoros, is not new. Nearly twenty years ago, François Baroin, then in charge of overseas territories, had already concluded that it was necessary to call into question land rights on this island which had become a French department.
