Taormina, in the department of excellence that the Region wants to close: “We bring cardiac surgery to the world”

The case

by Salvo Catalano

In recent days, the pediatric cardiac surgery of Taormina, which has an agreement with the Bambin Gesù children’s hospital, has been all over the media because the Sicilian Region has decided to close it after 13 years, not renewing the agreement. And to open one in Palermo in agreement with the San Donato foundation in Milan. Doctors and nurses don’t want to talk about it but they keep the bitterness inside, for the closure of an experience of excellence in the health sector. Even Fiorello, in recent days, had made an appeal during his morning press review on ‘Viva Rai due’ so that the department would not be closed. We have talked about their work, aimed not only at little Sicilians with heart problems, but also at many children in Africa and Asia. A feature of the department in recent years has in fact been internationalization: with missions in Tanzania, Haiti, Zambia, Libya. To treat and train local doctors. These days in Taormina there are doctors from different countries, starting with two cardiologists from Benghazi who are completing their training and then returning to Libya. We met them.
