Texas DPS advises against spring holidays in Mexico. “Significant Threat”

The state of Texas advises American citizens against traveling to Mexico during the spring break for safety reasons. The reason for concern of state officials is primarily the high activity of drug cartels.

“Drug cartel violence and other criminal activities pose a significant safety risk to anyone crossing the Mexican border right now,” said Texas Department of Public Safety director Steven McCraw.

The DPS recommendation could be due to several recent events involving US citizens in Mexico. Last week, four Americans were kidnapped shortly after crossing the US-Mexico border. Two of them were murdered, two were released.

In addition, three American women who went to Mexico to sell clothes at the market have been missing for more than two weeks.

“Based on the volatile nature of cartel activity and the violence we see there, we are urging individuals to avoid traveling to Mexico during this time,” McCraw added.
