The French automobile sector is fighting for its survival

DECRYPTION – Faced with the collapse of the production of thermal cars, the salvation of the sector requires electrification.

The figures are shocking. The observation, implacable, hardly encourages optimism. The Covid crisis caused a very large drop in French production, going from 2.1 million vehicles in 2019 to 1.3 million the following year. This fall of almost 40% has hardly been recovered since production was still below the bar of 1.4 million vehicles last year.

Taking a step back, the fall is much more dramatic: France produced 3.5 million vehicles in 2005. Europe as a whole was shaken by Covid. But market shares in Francecontinued to decline well before the pandemic, going from 15% in 2011 to 13% in 2021.
