The “Golden Lion” of the 80th Venice Film Festival was awarded to the film “The Poor and Unfortunate” by the Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, who impressed the participants of the film screening with an outstanding director’s imagination and the first-cl work of the actress Emma Stone. This was the expected decision – like most of the others, accepted by the jury chaired by the American director Damien Chazelle.
The Grand Jury Prize “Silver Lion” went to the Japanese Ryusuke Hamaguta’s environmental drama “Evil Does Not Exist.” It was indeed one of the most profound and masterfully shot films in the competition program.
The “Silver Lion” for directing was awarded to the Italian Matteo Garrone for the film “I, Captain”, and the young performer of the main role in it Seydou Sarr received the Marcello Mastroianna prize for the best young artist. This picture is dedicated to the topic of m migration, as well as “Green Border” by Agnieszka Holland: it was awarded the Special Jury Prize.
Peter Sarsgaard was recognized as the best actor of the festival: he played a hero suffering from dementia in Michel Franco’s film “Memory”. And Kayla Spain, who played the wife of Elvis Presley in the film “Priscilla” by Sofia Coppola, received the award for the best actress. Pablo Larrain and Guillermo Calderon were awarded the prize for the best screenplay of the Chilean film “The Count”.
In the “Horizons” program, the main prize was awarded to Hungarian Gabor Reisz’s film “Explanation to Everything”. And “Lion of the Future” – the prize for the best debut – won the film “Love is a pistol” by director from Taiwan Li Hongchi.
