The Security Service of Ukraine confirmed the identity of the soldier with the video of the execution of the Ukrainian prisoner
The Security Service of Ukraine announced on Sunday that the authorities had definitively established the identity of the soldier on the video of the shooting of a prisoner after the words “Glory to Ukraine” that appeared online earlier in March.
According to the SBU, this person was a sniper of the 163rd battalion of the 119th separate brigade of territorial defense of the Chernihiv region, Alexander Matsievsky. “It was possible to finally confirm the data of the hero after a complex of investigative actions, which included communication with relatives and friends of the deceased, as well as the processing of photo and video materials,” the SBU reported.
As noted, Alexander Matsievsky was called up for military service in March. Since the end of December, Kyiv considered him missing near the settlement of Krasnaya Gora in the Donetsk region. According to the special service, he was shot on December 30. In February, his body was returned to Ukraine.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, announced on Sunday that he had conferred the title of Hero on Matsievsky. “To a soldier. To a man who will be known by all Ukrainians. To a man who will be remembered forever. For his bravery, for his confidence in Ukraine – and for him, “Glory to Ukraine!” – the Russian service of the BBC quotes Zelensky’s words in an evening video address .
A video of the alleged execution of a Ukrainian prisoner of war by Russian soldiers appeared on social networks on March 6. Ukraine called what happened a war crime and called for an investigation at the international level.
Russia did not comment on the video.
Initially, representatives of the Ukrainian Armed Forces stated that the man on the videotape is Timofey Shadura, a soldier of the 30th separate mechanized brigade named after Prince Konstantin Ostrozhsky. On March 9, the Territorial Defense Command announced that in the video it is actually a fighter of the 119th separate brigade, Alexander Matsievsky.
