Those who love the orchestra will take the train

Like the Orchester national de Lyon, more and more phalanxes are considering favoring the railway for their tours. An ecological approach which does not come without disappointments.

Fifty tonnes of CO equivalent2 ! This is what the next tour of the Lyon National Orchestra in Spain would have cost in terms of carbon footprint, just a few years ago. For 2,800 kilometers traveled and four cities visited, the phalanx, which will travel the Iberian Peninsula from November 19 to 23, will ultimately leave a footprint of “only” 18.5 tons. A more than significant reduction, due to a radical choice: “Do everything by train… within the limits of possible”, concedes Laurent Croizier. For the new general secretary of the orchestra, the figures speak for themselves. “A tour like this requires 91 musicians and 11 members of the administration to be transported. Not to mention the 54 boxes of instruments and equipment, which represent no less than 5.4 tonnes and 48 m3 !” In the absence of a possible freight solution, this equipment will precede the musicians by truck.

But the instrumentalists will board the station this Sunday, heading for the first stage…
