France let slip the first point against Italy in the group match of the final phase of the Billie Jean King Cup in Seville against Italy.
Yet off to a good start, Alizé Cornet lost (6-2, 2-6, 2-6) against Martina Trevisan, who on Wednesday offered Italy the first point in the match opposing France in their pool of the final phase of the Billie Jean King Cup in Seville.
Alizé Cornet, 118th player in the world, was notably preferred for this match by captain Julie Benneteau to newcomer Varvara Gracheva (44th), naturalized in May.
Initially rather dominant against the Italian player (43rd in the world), who was very busy and who had to wait until the 6th game of the second round to win her face-off for the first time, Cornet gradually gave up in the middle of the second sleeve, even seeming physically affected.
Unable in turn to win her service game in the second set, the Frenchwoman saw her Italian opponent regain confidence and accuracy, and finally win in three sets.
The following match must pit French No.1 Caroline Garcia (20th) against Italian No.1 Jasmine Paoloni (30th), before a possible decisive double in the event of Garcia’s success.
The Blues will then face the Germans on Friday (10:00 a.m.).
To be invited to the last square, you must finish at the top of your group. The semi-finals are scheduled for Saturday, the final on Sunday. Each match consists of two singles followed by a doubles.
The 2022 edition was won by Switzerland, victorious in the final over Australia.
