The Frenchman confirmed his favorite status by beating the Italian Flavio Cobolli on Wednesday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, who celebrated his victory with a tribute to the Portuguese player.

Frenchman Arthur Fils, 19, the highest ranked (36th in the world) of the eight participants in the Next Gen ATP Finals, the Masters for under-22s, confirmed his favorite status by beating Flavio Cobolli (100th) 4-1, 4 -2, 4-2, Wednesday in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia).

Difficult winner in five sets from the Italian Luca Nardi (115th) on Tuesday, during the first day, Fils was much more convincing against the other Italian in the tournament.

With two victories in two matches in the green group, the Parisian took a big step towards the semi-finals, reserved for the first two in each group (of four).

In the other match of the green group, the Swiss Dominic Stricker (94th), eighth finalist at the US Open in September and surprised the day before by Cobolli, left no chance to Nardi, beaten 4-1, 4- 1, 4-2.

With the new rules tested during this “Next Gen Masters” –sets in 4 winning games, removal of the advantage at 40-A, reduction of time to serve…–, the games can go very quickly: Stricker won in 54 minutes, Son in 59.

Luca Van Aasche (70th), the other Frenchman in the tournament, winner on Tuesday of the Jordanian Abdullah Shelbayh (185th) in four sets, is scheduled for the evening against Hamad Medjedovic (110th), in the red group.

Arriving the same day from Malaga, where he was part of the Serbian Davis Cup team, Medjedovic was happy to beat late Tuesday evening, in the longest match of the first day (2h27), the American Alex Michelson, despite the cramps that plagued him throughout the last set.
