Unemployment, early retirement, discrimination… How senior employment has turned into a “huge waste”

DECRYPTION – The employment rate for 60-64 year olds in France is among the worst in the European Union. A costly dropout which the government has decided to tackle.

Soft skills, know-how, experience… many business leaders say it: senior employees are a godsend. Declarations of intentions which nevertheless have difficulty being translated into figures. France remains at lags behind its European neighbors and shows a low employment rate for these employees who are approaching retirement. A dropout that the Prime Minister, Élisabeth Borne, did not hesitate to designate in rarely used terms.Doing without the expertise of seniors and their experience is a huge waste, and we will not be able to achieve full employment without taking up this challenge.», she said this Thursday in front of bosses gathered by the Confederation of Small and Medium Enterprises (CPME).
