United States: a double shooting leaves seven dead in California

As investigators continue to try to break through the mystery surrounding the murder of 11 people in a California dance hall this weekend, A double shooting broke out Monday in farms in this western state of the United States, claiming the lives of seven other victims.

“At 2:22 p.m. today, sheriff’s officers were dispatched… following a report of a shooting that resulted in multiple casualties,” San Mateo County Police Chief Christina Corpus said during of a press conference in the evening.

“Upon arrival, officers found four deceased victims of gunshot wounds,” she continued, noting that a fifth seriously injured person had been hospitalized.

Chinese workers

Three other victims were discovered in another location, bringing the death toll to seven, she said.

The two shootings took place on farms in the municipality of Half Moon Bay, close to each other, said local television affiliates ABC and NBC.

The victims are Chinese agricultural workers, according to a local elected official quoted by NBC.

Suspect arrested at city police station

The suspect, Chunli Zhao, 67, then went to the city police station, Ms Corpus said. Journalists were already waiting for a press conference.

The spectacular images of his arrest show him wearing a gray vest with red sleeves and a light gray cap, being tackled to the ground and handcuffed, then searched, before being escorted by several police officers.

“Zhao was taken into custody without incident and a semi-automatic handgun was located in his vehicle,” said Christina Corpus, adding that the motive for these two shootings was not yet known.

“Tragedy after tragedy”

This tragedy occurred less than 48 hours after a man burst into the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park, 600 km further south, on Saturday evening, where he fired 42 rounds and massacred 11 men and women, all aged over 50, which California Governor Gavin Newsom did not fail to deplore.

“I’m in the hospital meeting victims of a mass shooting when I’m pulled away to report another shooting. This time in Half Moon Bay. Tragedy after tragedy,” the Democrat tweeted.

Joe Biden has also been informed, his spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said on Twitter. The American president “has asked federal law enforcement to provide all necessary assistance to local authorities,” she said.

After this carnage, which also left 9 injured, the shooter, Huu Can Tran, 72, had tried to continue his murderous evening in another dance hall not far from there, but had been disarmed there before fleeing and commit suicide in his van, surrounded by the police.

Gray areas about the suspect

Many gray areas remained Monday about this suspect. His criminal record only mentions an arrest in 1994 for illegal possession of a firearm, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna.

“We still don’t have a motive,” the sheriff admitted at a press conference.

Investigators are currently exploring the links between the killer and the two dance halls, in particular the relationship he had there, according to the Los Angeles Times, which cites police sources.
