USA: Joe Biden told Netanyahu that he cannot continue to operate in Gaza as before

US President Joe Biden told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a recent conversation that his planned offensive in the southern part of the Gaza Strip cannot look like its first part, Axios reports. The White House is said to be “extremely concerned” that such a scenario would further deepen the humanitarian catastrophe.

As the portal writes on Wednesday, during the leaders’ Sunday conversation, Biden allegedly told Netanyahu that the way Israel operated in the northern Gaza Strip, i.e. a broad offensive using three armored and infantry divisions, “cannot be repeated in the southern part of the enclave due to for the millions of Palestinians who are there.”

It is in the southern part of the Gaza Strip that most of the civilians who have evacuated from the war zone in the north are located.

A similar opinion was expressed on Tuesday by National Security Council spokesman John Kirby, who said during a briefing that the US “does not support operations in the south as long as the Israelis can demonstrate that they will take into account all internally displaced persons in Gaza.” President Biden wrote on Twitter on Tuesday that continued “terror, violence, killing and war” will only work to Hamas’ advantage.

According to Axios, the White House is “extremely concerned” that a renewed offensive in the south will cause even more civilian deaths and deepen the humanitarian crisis in the territory.

Netanyahu allegedly replied to the American president that actions in the south were necessary to achieve Israel’s goal – the destruction of Hamas. He also added that Israeli society does not agree to stopping the war.

As the Politico website notes, although Washington is pressing “to act with a scalpel, not with a hammer as before”, it is not clear how the Israelis would limit the number of victims of the conflict in the face of the conditions prevailing in the densely populated enclave.
