The 2020 census shows that the U.S. population was older and there were fewer children under the age of 5 than in 2010 or 2000. The number of people aged 65 and over has grown at the fastest rate, with one in six people over 65.
According to the census, the average age in America has increased from 28.1 in 1970 to 38.8 in 2020. In 2020, there were over 73.1 million children under the age of 18, a decrease of 1.4% from 2010.
The generation of baby boomers, i.e. people born in the years 1946-1964 and millennials from the years 1982-2000, are the two largest population groups in the USA. The number of people aged 65 and over increased by 38.6% to 55.8 million compared to the 2010 census. It grew almost five times faster than the total population between 1920 and 2020 combined.
The states with the highest percentage of over 65s are Maine (19.4%), Florida (18%), West Virginia (18.3%), Vermont (18.4%), Montana (17%) .8 percent) and South Carolina and New Hampshire (17.2 percent each).
Utah, on the other hand, was the youngest state. It has the highest proportion of 5-17 year olds with an average age of 31.3.
According to census data, the US population has grown to 331.4 million people in 2020. Despite aging, however, it remained relatively young compared to many other countries.
Japan has the highest proportion of older people at 28.5%. while the US was 16.8 percent. Also in many European countries and Canada, the percentage of people over 65 years old was higher than in the USA.
