Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is set to announce next week that he will be running for president of the United States. He will be the main Republican rival of former President Donald Trump, who is far ahead of him in the polls.
Reuters reported on Wednesday, citing its sources, that DeSantis will submit the necessary documents for his candidacy probably on May 25. This will coincide with a meeting in Miami of donors financing his election campaign. It will more formally declare its decision in the week of May 29.
“According to a source familiar with the governor’s intentions, the invitation to the May 25 event stated that donors would initiate ‘activities’, an obvious allusion to raising money for DeSantis,” Reuters reported.
According to the results of the latest Reuters and Ipsos poll on the 2024 Republican primaries, former US President Donald Trump maintains a clear advantage over the governor.
DeSantis’ rising popularity among Republicans and his fundraising skills likely make him the biggest threat to Trump, who has stepped up political attacks on the Florida governor in recent weeks.
