Van der Poel will prepare for the Worlds in Besançon

Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel has decided to run the Besançon cyclo-cross World Cup event on Sunday, with a view to preparing for the Worlds there the following weekend in Hoogerheide in the Netherlands.

“Mathieu has added the Besançon race to his programme. It will be the best place for the world championships in Hoogerheide” on February 5, Alpecin-Deceuninck said on social networks. Unlike the Dutchman, his great rival, the Belgian Wout Van Aert, will not be at the start of the French event. As for the outgoing world champion, Briton Tom Pidcock, he gave up defending his title and ended his winter season, preferring to focus on his preparation for the road season.

Van der Poel won the previous round of the World Cup last Sunday in Benidorm in Spain, where he beat Van Aert in the sprint. The Besançon event is the 14th and last race of the World Cup season. The Belgian Laurens Sweeck, present Sunday in the Doubs, is already guaranteed to finish at the top of the classification.
