The body granted a new reprieve to the city despite the concerns of its experts who consider the site threatened by overtourism and global warming.
The threat had been made before the summer. But the city of Venice escapes listing as a world heritage site in danger, the World Heritage Committee meeting in Riyadh decided on Thursday, contrary to the recommendations made by UNESCO experts. “The Committee took the decision not to inscribe Venice on the List of World Heritage in Danger”, we learned from UNESCO. The UN agency, whose headquarters is in Paris, had nevertheless recommended the clification “in danger” of Venice, a site threatened by overtourism and global warming, due to measures “insufficient” taken in Italy to combat the deterioration of the site.
