VIDEO. “His name was Oleksandre Matsievskiï”: the identity of the soldier shot confirmed by the Ukrainian authorities
The extremely shocking video went viral around the world in early March. Lasting about twelve seconds, the sequence first shows a man dressed in a Ukrainian uniform, smoking a cigarette, pronouncing the words “Glory to Ukraine”. These will be his last words. A few seconds later, the man is shot and falls to the ground. On Sunday, the Ukrainian authorities confirmed the identity of this soldier: his name would be Oleksandre Matsievskiï. The name of the soldier was therefore confirmed after several official sources had given two different identities.
This 42-year-old soldier, originally from Moldova, has become in a few days an iconic figure of the Ukrainian resistance. On Sunday, Volodymyr Zelensky even paid tribute to him by naming him “Hero of Ukraine”.
“Today I awarded the title Hero of Ukraine to Oleksandr Matsiyevsky, a soldier. A man that all Ukrainians will know. A man who will always be remembered. For his bravery, for his confidence in Ukraine and for his “Glory to Ukraine”, declared the Ukrainian President.
