Xavier Niel’s interest in Belgium is finally coming to fruition. After years of rumors, the French billionaire behind Free has just bought 6% of Proximus, the number one Belgian telecoms operator in his country for mobile and landlines. Surprise, the businessman known for shaking up established markets has set his sights on the historic player.

For this operation, he chose Carraun, the parent company of the Irish operator Eir which he also controls. “Eir is pursuing a strategy similar to that of Proximus,” explains the press release announcing the transaction. In Xavier Niel’s empire, Eir is another historic operator. Conversely, the entrepreneur built Iliad, his flagship, with new entrants in France, Italy and Poland.
