In the winter of 2023, the unit of the Norwegian company Yara in the Porto Indústria district, in Rio Grande, will be able to produce 1.2 million tons of fertilizers per year. According to Yara’s Director of Operations for the South Region, Lucas Elizalde, this is the perspective for the plant to reach its full capacity since the expansion had investments of R$ 2 billion finalized, in 2021. Yara intends to invest another BRL 150 million in actions for improvements and maintenance in the new operations. The information is contained in the 2023 Yearbook of Investments of Jornal do Comércio.

“From the moment we made that big investment, we have to maintain this routine of non-specific contributions in some new equipment or action, but in constant improvements of processes in our unit. We have in Rio Grande our most modern unit in Latin America , and in Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul is, without a doubt, our most important area of activity”, explains the director.

In 2022, the company invested another BRL 30 million in its first Shiploader system (automation of bulk loading of fertilizers on ships) in the country, and, with that, opened another window in the fertilizer market in Brazil and on the continent. It was possible to carry out the first cabotage of fertilizers in Brazil, with the shipment of the premium product manufactured in Rio Grande to São Luiz, in Maranhão. Since then, two other shipments have already taken place from the port of Rio Grande do Sul. Yara supplies, for example, its unit in Argentina from production in Rio Grande.
