Yvelines: the highly criticized panel in tribute to Ayatollah Khomeini vandalized

He has been widely criticized and embarrassed everyone in the village for the past few weeks. The panel installed in the village of Neauphle-le-Château (Yvelines) in tribute to Ayatollah Khomeini was the target this Wednesday morning of an act of vandalism.

One or more people have entered the wasteland where this sign in memory of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution in Iran is located. The window that protected the poster was broken, the poster taken out of its wooden frame and left on the ground.

Installed in 2017 on this private property and visible from the public highway, this sign recalls the visit of the Ayatollah to Neauphle-le-Château during his exile. He stayed there for about three months between October 1978 and February 1979, just before the flight of the Shah and his seizure of power in Iran.

This panel, “a very sensitive subject”

And if the public tribute did not stand out much so far, it was without counting on international news. While young people have been imprisoned and murdered for demonstrating in the streets of Iran for several months, this link with Rouhollah Khomeini – and in a certain way with the power in place – is becoming difficult to accept within the commune.

The mayor of Neauphle-le-Château is preparing a device to hide the panel from residents. But the media coverage of this project has caused a stir. “It’s a very sensitive subject. which elicits strong reactions and our goal is not to stir up hatred towards each other, ”explained the elected official, Élisabeth Sandjivy, Monday at Le Parisien.
